The collection includes: letter to Eliza Cabot Follen, 7 March 1847, discussing Danish author Harro Harring's problems with a New York publishing house; to My dear sir, 13 March 1848, containing news of his travels in the British Isles; to My dear Miss Carpenter, 6 May 1848, discussing his travels and his hope of seeing her in Bristol; to Dear sir, 9 March 1852, acknowledging a letter and invitation from S.B. Butheley, includes envelope; to Rev. M.D. Conway, 21 June 1853, arranging to meet. Also, to Mr. Bovee, 12 October 1858, thanking him for a gift and making arrangements to meet; to My dear cousin, Edward A. Washburn, 6 Dec. 1868, thanking him for an invitation and relating news which leads him to decline; to My dear sir, Rev. Mr. Dall, 15 Dec. 1862, regretting that they can not meet as planned; to My dear sir, 2 March, acknowledging receipt of a note; facsimile of a letter to My dear aunt, 28 Feb. 1816, in which the 12-year-old Emerson comments on preaching. Also, in the Allison-Shelley manuscript collection are letters to Hon. George Bancroft, 5 Sept. 1871, introducing Anna L. Folsom; to Thomas Carlyle, 19 Mar. 1839, full of friendly news; and a fragmentary note, titled The most ancient Church.

George Bancroft was an American historian and statesman, and an active promoter of secondary education both in his home state and at the national level. As U. S. Secretary of the Navy under James K.
